Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has reiterated that the Maldives' position on international issues remains unchanged, dismissing claims that the country has aligned itself with Ukraine in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Dr. Khaleel's statement followed a social media post from Estonia's Parliament after a meeting with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during his official visit to Estonia. The post highlighted discussions on security, the defense of international law, and support for Ukraine, thanking the Maldives for its backing of Ukraine at the United Nations.
The post sparked public debate, with some questioning whether the Maldives, which has so far maintained neutrality in the conflict, was now taking a side.
Responding to these concerns on X, Dr. Khaleel clarified that the Maldives' stance remains consistent, as reflected in its voting record at the UN. He emphasized the country's commitment to upholding the principles of independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity for all nations, in line with the UN Charter.
Estonia, which has been providing financial and military aid to Ukraine, is actively supporting the country in the ongoing conflict.
