Former Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Abdulla (Muhamma) and former Broadcasting Commission member Aminath Sarahath Izzath have been appointed as members of the Broadcasting Commission following a parliamentary vote.

When applications for the vacancies were announced, twelve individuals applied. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted the names to parliament in order of preference, with Mohamed Abdulla and former President Abdulla Yameen's spokesperson, Ibrahim Muaz Ali, at the top of the list.

However, the parliamentary committee's review altered the order, excluding Muaz from the list and placing Sarahath at the top, followed by journalist Shifza Mustafa in second, and Mohamed in third.

During last Thursday's extraordinary parliamentary sitting, Sarahath secured her appointment with 68 votes, while Mohamed received 58 votes. Despite being ranked second on the committee's list, Shifza garnered only 11 votes, with 50 ruling party People’s National Congress (PNC) MPs voting against her.

The appointments solidify the Broadcasting Commission's leadership as the institution addresses its ongoing responsibilities within the media sector.
