A biography detailing the life of Qasim Ibrahim, one of the Maldives' most successful businessmen and the Speaker of the Parliamentary session that formulated the current constitution, was released on Monday, February 10.
The book was launched at a ceremony held at Villa College, with Ilyas Ibrahim—recipient of the Order of Distinguished Rule of Izzudheen, the highest civilian honor in the Maldives—serving as the chief guest. Qasim, who moved to Malé at a young age and lived in Ilyas’s house in Maafannu Endherimaage, regards Ilyas as a father figure due to the close friendship between their fathers. This bond was the reason Qasim chose Ilyas to honor the book launch.
The event was attended by former Presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Dr. Mohamed Waheed, along with current ministers, members of Parliament, and individuals who have worked alongside Qasim in his political career. Family members were also present at the ceremony.
In addition to the hardcover edition of the book, an audiobook and a special website were also introduced. The biography, written by experienced journalist and author Mohamed Jameel, marks his third book. Jameel previously authored Orchid, which explores the coup d'état of Maldives’ first President Mohamed Amin Didi, and Insaafu, a biography of former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed.
An exhibition showcasing photographs from various stages of Qasim’s life was also opened that night. The exhibition, open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, offers visitors a free copy of the book.
Spanning over seven hundred pages, the biography chronicles Qasim’s personal, business, and political journey, highlighting the challenges he faced. It also includes rare color photographs of Qasim that have not been publicly seen before.
