Maafannu South MP Abdulla Rifau (Bochey) has submitted a proposal to amend parliamentary regulations, seeking to shorten the first session of Parliament and introduce a recess during Ramadan.

Currently, Parliament operates in three annual sessions:

  • First session: February to May 15

  • Second session: June to August 15

  • Third session: October to November 30

Under MP Rifau’s proposed amendment:

  • The first session would begin in January and end by the end of the month.

  • The second session would run from April to July 31.

  • The third session would remain unchanged, from September to November 30.

The amendment aims to ensure that Parliament concludes its first session before Ramadan, allowing MPs to take a recess during the holy month. If approved, the revised schedule would take effect this year, with the second and third sessions following the new timeline.
