A new 1.8 MW generator is scheduled to arrive in Addu City next week as part of ongoing efforts to resolve the persistent power outages affecting the connected islands of Addu.
Previously, on January 17, 2025, Fenaka Corporation delivered a 1.8 MW generator under an agreement with STELCO, but power interruptions have continued, prompting increasing public complaints.
In response, Fenaka stated that significant improvements have been made over the past two months to address the power issues and confirmed that another 1.8 MW generator will be installed next week.
Fenaka has also been working to repair damaged generators, and last month, the company successfully fixed and restarted one of the units.
The second generator is expected to be operational before the end of Ramadan, and the third will be repaired with imported spare parts.
Fenaka has confirmed that the necessary spare parts for the repairs have already arrived in Addu City. If no further complications arise, the repairs should be completed by March 10.
The company clarified that the most recent power outage was caused by an unforeseen technical malfunction in one of the generator sets, but repairs are currently in progress and should be finished later today.
To improve the power supply, Fenaka is also focusing on enhancing ventilation at the Hithadhoo power plant to optimize the performance of the generators. However, some materials need to be imported, and the upgrade is expected to be completed within a month.
During peak hours, the connected islands of Addu City require 12 MW of electricity. There are currently 20 generators installed in Hithadhoo with a combined capacity of 26.8 MW, though several units have been out of service, worsening the power supply issues since last year.
