The 16-year-old passenger who was injured in the July 13 accident has been discharged from the hospital after treatment for his injuries.
The accident claimed the life of the 17-year-old driver of the motorbike and injured the two others: The 16-year-old and Ibrahim Shujau, a 40-year-old jogger.
All were taken to Indhira Gandhi Hospital (IGMH), where the 17-year-old was pronounced dead that night.
Meanwhile, Shujau was placed on life support and was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but has since been taken off ventilator support.
When the runner used the zebra crossing to jog to the opposite side of the road, the speeding motorcyclist struck him, according to CCTV footage of the collision. He and the youngster in the motorcycle's backseat are seen attempting in vain to get out of the way before being struck by the motorcycle and flung to the ground. In the meantime, the truck that was traveling in the other direction threw the boy who was riding the motorcycle under.
Police are still investigating the accident.
The tragic incident has been a harrowing reminder of the alarmingly high amount of traffic accidents in the Greater Male’ region, particularly Male’.
Notably, a bill that would change the Penal Code to make reckless driving a crime was presented to the Parliament on Saturday. Meekail Ahmed Naseem, the MP for the opposition MDP in South Galolhu, filed the measure.
