Velana’s new passenger terminal is set to open on July 26, Independence Day. The new terminal, which spans 78,000 square meters, will significantly increase the airport’s capacity. The terminal will be able to handle up to 7 million passengers annually, compared to the current capacity of 1.5 million, while Maldives sees over 2 million tourist arrivals per year.

The terminal promises modern amenities to its passengers, such as aerobridges, advanced baggage handling systems, multiple food and beverage outlets, retail stores and lounges.

There will also be new and improved features including self check-in kiosks, self bag-drops and automated baggage handling systems that will make the offloading luggages a smoother experience.

The project is part of a broader initiative to enhance the capacity and operational efficiency of Velana International Airport while balancing tourism expansions with environmental considerations.

The project is a key milestone in the government's broader infrastructure development efforts and the country's continued growth as a global tourism destination.
