Former national football player and former FAM President Ahmed Thoriq, commonly referred to as Tom, has been chosen unopposed as the new President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) during an extraordinary congress held today in Meeruma.

Thoriq, who previously held the role of FAM President for a short time in 2016, is back in the position with the unanimous backing of all affiliated clubs. With no other candidates running, Thoriq and his suggested executive committee took office unchallenged.

New FAM Executive Committee:

Presiding Officer: Ahmed Thoriq

Vice President Senior: Ali Ibrahim (New Radiant)

Vice Presidents: Hussain Shafiu (Maziya), Mujtaba Jaleel (New Radiant)

Participants: Imran Mohammad (Inma), Mohammad Umair, Ahmed Abbas (TC), Ali Rizwan (BG) Female Members : Hawa Nasra Sayed (MP), Hawa Rashida Abdullah Nasih (Audi)

The elections came after recent changes to FAM’s statutes, which were unanimously approved during a general body meeting on 27 June. The Normalisation Committee appointed by FIFA proposed these amendments to align the association’s governance with international standards and national regulations.

 Important Revisions Encompass:

Allowing membership for all clubs in the First and Second Divisions Requiring the formation and acknowledgment of regional associations according to the revised Sports Act.

Enabling the governing body to arrange regional competitions. Mandating that a framework for a women's football tournament be submitted to Congress within one year.

Thoriq ran a campaign focused on expanding football development to the atolls and restoring the framework and integrity of Maldivian football.

His election arrives at a pivotal moment for FAM, which is presently facing a criminal inquiry regarding financial misconduct.

In spite of previous delays and controversies surrounding elections, FIFA enabled a normalisation process, leading to today's elections and reforms in structure. The updated membership consists of 23 general members, which includes 10 First Division clubs and 13 Second Division clubs.
