Ooredoo Maldives has achieved a major milestone by completing the first-ever submarine cable landing at a Maldivian resort— Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi. This initiative not only improves the Maldives’ digital connectivity but also raises the standard for internet infrastructure in high-end tourism destinations.
The cable is a key component of Ooredoo’s growing network, connecting Ithaafushi, Maafushi, and the company's advanced Data Center in Hulhumalé. It aims to offer faster, more stable internet services across various sectors, from hospitality to everyday use.
The launch event, held at the resort, featured notable guests including Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, Ooredoo Maldives CEO Khalid Al-Hamadi, and executives from Waldorf Astoria and the Communications Authority. During his speech, Al-Hamadi reaffirmed Ooredoo’s long-standing commitment to driving technological progress and its influential role in Maldivian society over the past 20 years.
As Ooredoo Maldives celebrates two decades of service in the nation, this significant project underscores the company’s steadfast dedication to its Digital Maldives vision, a bold initiative designed to fuse world-class technology with Maldivian culture to uplift communities, boost economic growth, and close the digital gap throughout the archipelago.
