The Police Anti-Scam Centre issued a public advisory on Monday, urging people to be cautious of deceptive ‘free Wi-Fi’ offers in public spaces, especially airports. The warning comes after reports of individuals being scammed through fraudulent internet access points disguised as complimentary Wi-Fi.
Officials stressed the importance of increased vigilance, particularly for travelers, concerning public Wi-Fi fraud. A recent police social media update emphasized an increase in scams exploiting hotspots marked 'Free WiFi' to deceive people in locations like airports.
To reduce such occurrences, the police advise confirming that the network name matches the official Wi-Fi service. Additionally, users are strongly recommended to avoid entering banking applications or email accounts and to abstain from sensitive financial activities while using public Wi-Fi networks.
The police additionally recommended that people act cautiously and use trustworthy Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) when asked for personal information to use Wi-Fi services.
