Regarding the assassination of Zakiyya Moosa, discovered deceased in N. Holhudhoo, Mihaaru News has reported that the National Integrity Commission (NIC) has suggested criminal charges be brought against multiple high-ranking police officials, including the present Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen.
The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) previously stated that talks had started with the Prosecutor General about possibly prosecuting the involved officers. A spokesperson for the PGO has stated that the NIC has filed chargesheets for seven police officers.
Among those the NIC aims to prosecute are Commissioner Naveen—who was acting as Deputy Commissioner during the incident— Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Riyaz, and Chief Superintendent Hassan Shifaau, Head of the Major Crime Department.
The situation encompasses grave accusations, such as misuse of official power, hindrance of justice, interference with government bodies, and improper handling of the deceased.
Zakiyya, 50, was discovered deceased near a storage facility situated near the kitchen of her residence in N. Holhudhoo.
Although she was recognized for having mental health struggles, numerous residents of Holhudhoo, including some of her family— maintain that her death was not a suicide but was actually a homicide. Witnesses stated her body was discovered with her neck nearly cut through, raising significant concerns regarding the conditions of her death.
A significant issue highlighted by the community is that Zakiyya's remains were interred without a standard autopsy being conducted. A virtual autopsy was performed instead. This approach, incorporating CT scans, MRIs, and photographic records of the body and crime scene, determined that her death was due to self-inflicted wounds.
Nonetheless, skepticism persists, as critics challenge the dependability of the virtual autopsy in a situation featuring such extensive bodily injury.
Official grievances and issues concerning Zakiyya’s demise and the management of the investigation have been presented to Home Minister Ali Ihusan and President Mohamed Muizzu.
