A senior delegation of political figures and civil society representatives from Europe and South Asia is traveling to the Maldives from 11–12 August 2025 to enhance dialogue and collaboration between the two areas.
Arranged by the South Asia Regional Office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), the trip is part of a wider study tour in South Asia that includes India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.
Dr. Carsten Klein, the Regional Director of FNF South Asia, states that the goal is to strengthen ties, especially between Germany and South Asia, while showcasing chances for shared learning.
The delegation consists of notable German political leaders like Ms. Sandra Weeser, Representative in the Bundestag; Dr. Marcus Faber, Head of the Bundestag Defence Committee; and Dr. Jürgen Martens, President of the Deutsche Gruppe der Liberal International, along with additional figures from politics, industry, and civil society.
During their time in Malé, the group plans to meet with the Mayor of Malé, the Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, the Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, as well as members of the Maldives-German Friendship Group.
Their talks will center on democratic changes, transparency in legislation, adapting to climate change, and strengthening political cooperation between South Asia and Europe.
The schedule also features a guided visit of the Maldivian Parliament.
The Maldives, situated strategically in the Indian Ocean, is crucial for regional maritime security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
Alongside its worldwide acclaim as a travel hotspot, it plays a crucial role in fisheries, climate initiatives, and sustainable ocean management.
The study visits organized by FNF South Asia seek to advance liberal-democratic principles, enhance economic collaboration, and reinforce political involvement between South Asia and Europe.
South Asia, housing close to two billion individuals, is increasingly important politically and economically for Europe.
