The Government of Japan has provided five speedboats to the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to improve its maritime operational capabilities and law enforcement activities at sea.
The formal handover event occurred today at K. Dhoonidhoo, where the ships were given by the Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, and accepted on behalf of MPS by Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen.
Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry, senior MPS officials, and representatives from the Government of Japan were present at the event.
During the ceremony, Commissioner Naveen thanked Japan for its ongoing assistance, highlighting that the speedboats will greatly enhance law enforcement in Maldivian waters.
He mentioned that the donation of these vessels will improve our marine operations and support more efficient law enforcement at sea.
Ambassador Rumiko emphasized that the donation aims to enhance the marine police's capabilities and assist in initiatives to bolster maritime safety and security.
She conveyed optimism that the ships would aid in tackling difficulties encountered by the MPS in protecting the country's waters.
In a show of gratitude, MPS awarded an honorary plaque to the Government of Japan.
The donation is part of Japan's ongoing support to Maldivian law enforcement and security forces.
Japan donated 54 cars and four vans to MPS last year, in addition to other equipment.
Japan has previously supplied vehicles and resources to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) as well as the Maldives Customs Service.
