Palestine Unfiltered, a poetry recital dedicated to raising awareness for the Palestinians facing unspeakable hardships in Gaza— took place at the Function Five event hall on 21 August.
The recital was brought together through the joint collaboration between Infusions of Ink and Underwater Poet Society (UWPS), spearheaded by Abdullah Razy and Aashiya Shaaha Haleem respectively.
The event commenced from 8:30 PM to 11:00 PM, and featured recitals of 10 poets. Every poem recited ranged from a cry for help, to a hopeful and fierce stand against the injustices committed against Palestine. Themes of revolutionism, genocide, boycott, loss and the horrors of war were rife within each poems that were spoken. “It was incredibly exhilarating to be in that space, surrounded by so many other gifted and brilliant writera. I was deeply moved by the large turnout at this significant event, with people passionate about our cause. Many individuals fail to realize the strength of our words and the significance that each word we write and speak holds. Hearing everyone’s heartfelt poems was truly surreal, with many of us in tears and others striving to remain composed. The sensation I experienced voicing my thoughts aloud and realizing they’re influencing everyone I communicated with is beyond description. I'm pleased that Infusions of Ink and Underwater Poet Society have united to connect us all. It seemed as if we were an army, battling for justice. Fighting for humankind. I sincerely appreciate them for coordinating such a meaningful event." Said Rasha, speaking on her experience at the event.
Aashiya Shaahaa Haleem, the President of Underwater Poet Society, said that the topic of Palestine is one of the causes she and her team are passionate about and wanted to provide a space for everyone to share their feelings on the matter.
The idea for this poetry recital came to Shaahaa during the ongoing process of making an anthology poetry book on Palestine, with multiple poets and writers lending their contributions to it. Her expected outcome for the event is for people to feel inspired and do what they can for Palestine, whether it be through poetry, writing or other means.
Abdullah Razy, a representative of Infusions of Ink, spoke fondly of his time working on the event. While there were “hiccups” along the way, he has stated that the process was smooth sailing thanks to the collaboration between his and Shaaha’s teams.
He and Shaaha also expressed heartfelt thanks to his mentor Ms. Yooli, a well-known teacher and creative figure in the arts scene who acted as a huge benefactor to this event. They also conveyed their sincere gratitude to Akki Rasheed, founder of Blood Donors MV, who works tirelessly for Palestine and takes part in every event regarding the nation. He has been a longtime supporter of UWPS since their inception.
He hopes to continue collaborating with UWPS and see about creating more events like Palestine Unfiltered in the near and far future.
