Islamic minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has revealed intentions to broaden the assistance offered via the Zakat Fund, with suggestions to encompass healthcare, education, and housing.

During the inaugural ceremony of the International Zakat Conference, Minister Shaheem announced that a policy document on the issue is being drafted for cabinet submission.

"If we can achieve this, I am confident that a positive society will emerge in the Maldives." “All individuals who receive zakat have the potential for development,” he stated.

Minister Shaheem emphasized that zakat is the sole pillar of Islam capable of adapting to changing times and situations, noting that a "modern interpretation" of poverty and necessity is crucial.

The minister stated that the Maldives seeks to emerge as a world leader in zakat management, emphasizing the government's Zakat Bill, which is currently in parliament.

He characterized it as "far more comprehensive" than laws in other nations, including both organizational and legal frameworks, alongside an Investment Advisory Committee to oversee funds.

Minister Shaheem stated that the legislation, created with contributions from academics at the previous year's Zakat Conference, is anticipated to be approved in October and subsequently translated and distributed worldwide.
