Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, the former Vice President and Tourism Minister, has condemned the emphasis on symbolic acts in Maldivian politics, stating that genuine national advancement should be assessed through concrete outcomes instead of ceremonies and speeches.

In a message posted on X, Adeeb emphasized the necessity of guaranteeing that citizens can access essential needs like food security, debt relief, sufficient housing, and equitable engagement in the country’s economy.

He also highlighted the importance of contemporary financial instruments, like e-wallets, in fostering a more inclusive economy.

“Our forebears did not use grand language or conceal themselves in rituals; Boduthakurufaanu rescued this nation through deeds, international assistance, and the affection of the Maldivian people. We must adopt that spirit of decisive action today.” Said Adeeb.

Adeeb, the former vice president and tourism minister, received a 20-year prison sentence and a fine of MVR 2 million due to his participation in the corruption scandal involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

His sentence was greatly lessened and forgiven during the closing days of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s term, after which Adeeb departed the nation and has not come back.
