The Maldives has been chosen as Vice-President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the rest of 2025.
In this role, the Maldives will keep meeting the obligations of the Asia-Pacific Group as Vice-President.
In response to this development, the President remarked that the Maldives "has a demonstrated history of championing human rights concerns."
Characterizing this as a "milestone" for the country, the President stated that the Maldives would enhance its dedication to uphold justice, equality, and human dignity, in line with its robust commitments as an engaged UNHRC member.
The President wrapped up his X post by stating, "The Maldives is continually working towards creating a fairer and more inclusive world for everyone."
The Maldives has a track record of holding significant roles within the UN. He has been chosen as the Vice-President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled to commence in September. Former Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid previously led the 76th UN General Assembly.
The Maldives joined the United Nations as a member state on September 21, 1965, 25 days following the signing of its independence.
