In his vision of creating a safer Maldives, President Muizzu put forth the Prevention of Gang Crimes and Other Dangerous Crimes Act. This law promises to dismantle organized crime, restore public safety and protect youth from crime.
Ratified on May 25 and put into effect today, the law grants extensive authority to law enforcement and imposes harsh new punishments for gang-related crimes, with prison terms up to 25 years and fines up to MVR 10 million.
For years, antiquated laws rendered it almost impossible to hold criminals responsible. The updated law empowers law enforcement to:
Hold suspects for a maximum of 48 hours without access to legal representation.
Refuse bail for individuals charged with severe offenses.
Detain without a judicial warrant when there is probable cause of a major offense.
Access and investigate private property without a warrant, detain suspects, and stay on-location for a reasonable period.
