The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has prohibited the import, sale, and consumption of the US-made drink Dr Pepper after tests indicated high levels of benzoic acid, a compound that can be detrimental to health if ingested in large quantities.

The choice comes after a notification from the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), which verified that the item had reached the Maldivian market.

In a formal announcement, the MFDA stated:

“As a precautionary measure, this product is prohibited from being imported, distributed, sold, or consumed in the Maldives.”

Officials have additionally mandated the prompt removal and secure disposal of any existing supply of Dr. Pepper presently in the nation.
