President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed that the Government will initiate a National Engineers’ Award in 2026 to recognize the crucial contributions of engineers to the country’s growth.

The declaration was made as the Maldives celebrated its inaugural National Engineers’ Day on 30 August.

In his speech at the inaugural event, President Muizzu conveyed warm wishes to engineers in every field and proclaimed 30 August as “Maldives Engineers’ Day,” set to be commemorated each year.

The date was selected to celebrate the inauguration of the Sinamalé Bridge, the nation’s biggest infrastructure project, which opened seven years back.

Considering its transformative effects, President Muizzu emphasized how engineering achievements have improved connectivity, stimulated economic growth, and enriched the everyday lives of Maldivians.

He further highlighted the importance of engineers in realizing national objectives, such as the government's aim to turn the Maldives into a developed country by 2040, speeding up digitalization initiatives, and promoting the transition to renewable energy.

Looking forward, President Muizzu emphasized his administration's dedication to enhancing education, research, and training options in engineering while guaranteeing that engineers are properly acknowledged with the forthcoming National Engineers’ Award.

In concluding his speech, the President lauded the creativity of Maldivian forebears and encouraged contemporary engineers to continue this tradition of innovation, finishing with a prayer for a thriving and advanced future for the Maldives.
