Former President Mohamed Nasheed, head of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and speaker of parliament stated on Sunday that all political parties except for the Jumhoory Party (JP), form the government coalition had agreed to hold a constitutional referendum on transitioning to a parliamentary system.

As he recovers from injuries he incurred in an assassination attempt in May, Nasheed held a virtual press conference on Sunday afternoon from the United Kingdom.

First press conference since the May attack, Nasheed said that MDP conveyed its desire to transform Maldives' government structure from a presidential one with all coalition partners.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the MRM's leader, has spoken out against a transfer to a parliamentary system. People had already made up their minds in 2007, according to him.

On Twitter, shortly after Nasheed's press appearance, MRM denied pledging to support any government system other than a presidential one.

In the tweet stated that, In the past, MRM has been a proponent of a presidential system and they have never decided or agreed to endorse an alternative system, nor have agreed with any party to do so.
