The National Assembly of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has sanctioned a resolution to hold multiple protests in Malé against the government.

The resolution was passed during an urgent meeting of the National Assembly on Monday evening, solely focused on that decision. The motion was put forward by Mohamed Thorig, who is the Manadhoo constituency president, and was supported by Ahmed Saleem, the Hoarafushi constituency president.

The resolution urges protests against what the party characterized as governmental attempts to weaken independent media and block the public from obtaining information about supposed corruption and fraud.

The resolution reads as follows:

  • President Mohamed Muizzu is working to undermine the constitutional framework.

  • The economic policies of the government have resulted in the mishandling and theft of public finances.

  • Constitutional amendments have been employed to limit Parliament's authority, suspend judges of the Supreme Court, and bring independent institutions under direct governmental oversight.

  • The decentralisation framework has been weakened, diminishing the power of local councils.

  • Millions of dollars have been squandered under the guise of housing initiatives.

  • A bill for media regulation has been proposed to limit press freedom and hinder the revelation of government wrongdoing.

The resolution indicated that the present circumstances threaten national sovereignty and may impact regional stability.

The resolution states that the MDP plans to conduct a large protest in Malé on 3 October. The demonstrations will persist until the government alters its direction.

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the former President and current advisor to the MDP, also supported the resolution. Every participant attending the meeting cast their vote in support.
