The Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), a state-owned utility firm, is seeking methods to earn dollar revenue from tourism to mitigate increasing foreign currency expenses.

During the PSM’s Raajje Miadhu programme, MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed mentioned that the company needs approximately USD 25 million each year for fuel purchases, but challenges in obtaining dollars in the local market are increasing expenses.

“Our clients comprise individuals who generate income in dollars.” For instance, tourist amenities, whether located in Maafushi or Male'. "We are investigating if we can establish contracts that permit them to compensate us in dollars," Matheen stated.

The board of MWSC is contemplating utilizing the company’s specialized knowledge in water and sewer services to aid in tourism development initiatives as a way to generate revenue. In this context, Matheen emphasized the continued efforts by the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) to finish the Naagoashi resort project in Haa Dhaalu atoll that was initiated for tourism development 17 years ago and is now anticipated to launch next year.

Matheen stated that the expected outcomes of these initiatives will become evident soon.
