Today, the Maldives Government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) finalized a grant agreement totaling JPY 1.56 billion (around USD 10.5 million) to assist in the Construction Phase of the Malé Island Disaster Resilience Enhancement Project.

The contract was endorsed in Malé by Hassan Miras, Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, and Taki Motoo, Resident Representative of JICA Maldives Office.

This comes after a prior grant agreement signed in October 2024, in which JICA funded up to JPY 20 million for the project's detailed design.

The initiative seeks to enhance disaster resilience in Malé by minimizing damage from waves and heavy rain through the restoration of seawalls and the implementation of stormwater drainage systems, thus protecting lives, economic activities, and social infrastructure in the capital.

Essential aspects of the project consist of:

- Restoration of the seawall encircling Malé Island.

- Acquisition and setup of equipment for stormwater management.

- Advisory services to assist in project execution.

The initiative aims to improve Malé’s ability to withstand water-related disasters and secure vital services, fostering sustainable urban growth in the capital.
