Deputy Speaker and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim stated on Sunday evening that freedom of expression should be practiced with responsibility, and social media needs regulation.

Following the SanguTV report, Nazim discussed the media bill that is presently in the committee phase. He also mentioned his comments during a past interview with Sun about the suggestion of a bill to oversee journalism and the Internet.

In an interview with Sun Online's "Editaruge Suvaalu" (Editor's Questions) program last January, Nazim mentioned that a bill was being drafted to govern the internet, social media, and journalism under a single framework.

Nazim previously mentioned that he took part in the examination of the bill. His previous remarks regarding social media regulation are now circulating on social media. Some claim that the legislation also seeks to control social media.

Regarding the accusations, Nazim stated that he shared his personal viewpoint in that interview. He stated that social media had no limitations, and activities like 'selling one’s children online and creating TikToks about family issues’ were actions that disrupted social norms and community cohesion.

“Thus, I continue to hold the view [on regulating social media] currently, but not all my beliefs will be accepted by parliament, and even if I think they should be, it may not be agreeable to the committee, so discussions on regulating or banning social media are not happening,” he stated.

He mentioned that the media legislation would be revised according to the current suggestions and global best practices. Consequently, when the committee approves the bill, it will be significantly improved compared to when Hannan initially proposed it.
