The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BCC) has instructed Channel 13 to halt its transmission for two hours tomorrow due to breaches of the national broadcasting Code of Practice.
As stated by the Commission, the penalty pertains to material broadcast during a live segment of the People's National Front (PNF)'s show "The Front Office" on April 17 of the previous year. The BCC reported that the material breached broadcasting regulations, leading to disciplinary measures.
Consequently, Channel 13 is required to halt its transmission from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. tomorrow.
In another instance, the Commission has given an official warning to Rajje TV concerning content broadcast during the MDP's emergency rally conducted on March 12. The BCC acknowledged that the transmission contained content that infringed upon the dignity and rights of children, prompting an inquiry.
The Commission highlighted that Rajje TV had violated set rules concerning the safeguarding of children in broadcasting. It cautioned that another occurrence might lead to harsher penalties, based on the seriousness and type of the offense.
The alert comes after contentious statements made during the rally by MDP member Mariyam Zubair (Mandhy), alluding to the eldest son of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The statements prompted First Lady Sajidha Mohamed to initiate a defamation lawsuit in Civil Court, which determined that the remarks had damaged the child's reputation.
