On Thursday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu formed a state agency called the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC), in accordance with Article 4 of the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act.
The agency was established through the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Bill, which was approved on Thursday.
On June 18, a bill was presented in Parliament by Thulhaadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abubakr, who is associated with the government, allowing the government to manage the media.
The government showed its backing for the bill when it was presented to parliament, and it was swiftly examined and approved by the ruling supermajority. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Dhiggaru Constituency, Ahmed Nazim, stated that he took part in the examination of the bill.
Reporters have voiced worries regarding the legislation since it was proposed. Initially, the bill stipulated that the President would appoint three of the seven members of the media oversight commission (MMBC) along with its chairman. Subsequent revisions granted this authority to the parliament.
The law additionally gives MMBC the authority to revoke a media outlet's registration and take measures against specific journalists during the commission's investigation of reports.
