President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Government's dedication to hearing and responding to the needs of fishermen. He provided this guarantee during a gathering with fishermen at the President's Office this morning – the third meeting of its kind between the President and the fishing community.
Throughout the discussion, fishermen voiced various concerns, particularly emphasizing the necessity for a definitive timeline regarding the increase of the fish purchase price to MVR 20 per kilogram. They also pointed out a decrease in the baitfish population, although Vaavu Atoll was recognized as providing the ideal conditions for baitfishing. Other worries involved challenges in obtaining loans from the Bank of Maldives (BML) and barriers to acquiring fishing licenses. They also emphasized wider issues concerning fishing and fish measurement across various areas of the Maldives.
In bringing up these matters, the fishermen recognized the Government’s efforts to assist the industry and tackle earlier issues, yet emphasized the need for additional enhancements.
In reply, President Dr Muizzu promised them that the price for fish would rise once the 48-hour payment system is completely stabilized. He also pledged to collaborate closely with fishermen to tackle their issues.
Concerning the loan challenges mentioned, he stated that, following the Government's policies, BML would receive guidance to streamline the loan application process by minimizing documentation needs. He mentioned that the current land reclamation initiatives in Vaavu Atoll would proceed in collaboration with fishermen to ensure their perspectives were included.
