Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called on all citizens who stand against corruption and authoritarianism to gather in the capital, Malé City, in a demonstration of political resistance that is expected to be one of the largest protests seen in recent times.

Positioning the forthcoming demonstration on October 3 not as a party occurrence but as a national revolt, Nasheed asserted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s government has dismantled the nation’s constitutional structure and stolen from the state.

Now rejoined with the primary opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) since his return on June 23, Nasheed is calling on every citizen who cherishes integrity, democracy, and the rule of law to unite against what he depicts as a regime descending into unrestrained authoritarianism and institutional failure.

MDP is ramping up efforts for the large-scale protest, framed not merely as political opposition, but as a public uprising against a government charged with corruption, misappropriation, and misuse of authority.

Banners and posters have overwhelmed the streets of Malé City and Hulhumalé, while community organizing, pickup rallies, public engagement, and focused messaging are in full effect.

Nasheed has also suggested a top-level national conference to promptly tackle state corruption, systemic abuse, and financial misconduct, urging for united action across political divisions.

The meeting occurs at a time of increasing dissatisfaction. Critics claim that the Muizzu government is directing the nation toward authoritarianism, as public services decline and living costs keep rising. Critics allege that the government is embezzling public resources and eroding institutional safeguards to centralize authority.
