The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) initiated a mission to Saudi Arabia from October 5–7, 2025, to explore strategic partnerships, aiming to tap into the vast potential of the Saudi outbound travel market and enhance tourism collaboration between the two countries.
Boasting a population of over 35 million and swiftly expanding air links, Saudi Arabia stands as one of the most vibrant outbound tourism markets in the Middle East. Increasing disposable incomes, changing travel preferences, and economic stability have motivated Saudi travelers to pursue premium short-haul destinations that provide exclusivity and cultural resonance — a niche where the Maldives excels.
In line with its mission, MATATO conducted high-level discussions with important Saudi stakeholders to enhance cooperation in tourism, media, and trade. On October 6, the team convened with the Maldives Embassy in Riyadh to organize collaborative promotional activities, resulting in a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize partnership in marketing, stakeholder involvement, and joint tourism advancement.
Moreover, MATATO engaged with the Middle East Broadcasting Center (MBC) — the top media conglomerate in the region — to discuss storytelling collaborations that will elevate the Maldives’ visibility and emotional connection with Saudi audiences. The organization is also involved in the BTR program, which brings together tour operators, travel agencies, and hospitality executives to promote direct business interaction and networking possibilities.
