Police assure no data leaks have occurred from seized phone of activist

The Maldives Police Service has confirmed this evening that digital devices taken for investigation are managed according to international standards, ensuring there is no chance of data breaches from these devices.


On Thursday, authorities confiscated the phone of young political activist Aishath Shimon, alleging that she had threatened President Dr Mohamed Muizzu via a post on social media platform X.


Following the phone's confiscation, a new account appeared on X named 'Shimon's phone', which shared a picture of her.


Shimon claims that this photo was released by the Police, who have taken her phone.


Police issued a statement addressing these allegations, affirming that all evidence obtained during investigations, including electronic devices, is managed according to protocols set by international standards.


The devices and all information contained within them are safeguarded by these policies, Police confirmed, stating that there is no chance of data breaches from these confiscated devices.


They refuted claims that videos and images were released from a confiscated device.


Authorities confirmed that inquiries are carried out with utmost professionalism and total adherence to legal standards, guaranteeing that all evidence stays protected.


The statement notes that the service prioritizes upholding human rights and adhering to professional standards.
