Complaints have been submitted to the National Integrity Commission (NIC) and the People's Majlis regarding the police's disclosure of a photo from the seized mobile phone of a young opposition activist.

Aishath Shimon Ahmed, 20, was trapped close to her residence in Male' on Wednesday night, where police took her phone without displaying a warrant.

Authorities would not clarify the reason her phone was taken and initially ignored requests to present a court order for its confiscation.

However, they later presented the warrant and alleged that a member of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) youth wing had used social media to threaten President Mohamed Muizzu.

Fewer than 24 hours after her phone was taken, a nameless account on social media X released the picture from her device.

X has now deactivated the account following numerous reports from social media users indicating it violated the platform's regulations.

Shimon's attorneys informed Adhadhu that a grievance was lodged with the NIC on Friday, and the issue was presented to the People's Majlis today.

The accusations allege that the police violated her constitutional right to privacy and sought to damage her reputation by disclosing the nude image.

In an interview with Adhadhu, Shimon claimed the police had released the photo from her phone.

"Those details were solely on my phone." Not found anywhere else. That image is not available anywhere else. The police seized my phone, took it away, and within a day, it was leaked. "That information won’t be found anywhere else," she stated.

In a statement released soon after Adhadhu reported the news, the Maldives Police Service refuted claims of leaking the photo from the phone they have.
