The Maldives has made global history by being the first nation worldwide to eradicate maternal transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B, a significant achievement officially recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The accomplishment signifies a significant advancement in the nation's public health initiatives and demonstrates years of ongoing dedication to maternal and child health.

The WHO declared that the Maldives has fulfilled all necessary criteria for “triple elimination,” indicating that the transmission of the three diseases from mother to child has been lowered to such minimal levels that they are no longer a public health issue.

The WHO states that this acknowledgment underscores the Maldives' robust partnership among government agencies, private healthcare entities, civil organizations, and global collaborators.

Nationwide screening, efficient service delivery, community outreach, and technical assistance were instrumental in achieving this significant milestone.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in a message shared on his official X account, conveyed his gratitude to all healthcare workers, communities, and partners whose commitment enabled the success.
