The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has revealed that flights at Hanimaadhoo International Airport will move to the ground floor of the newly built terminal beginning Wednesday, October 16.

The initiative aims to match the airport’s infrastructure with the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority’s requirements, allowing Code C aircraft to use the entire length of the newly constructed runway. MACL announced that to satisfy runway clearance needs, the current terminal and nearby tall buildings will be taken down.

During the transition, the airport jetty across from the existing terminal will be taken out of service. Travelers and airport visitors will briefly rely on the Hanimaadhoo port for access and transportation services.

The move signifies a significant milestone in the ongoing expansion project of Hanimaadhoo Airport, which is being financed through an USD 800 million credit line provided by Exim Bank of India and agreed upon by the prior administration in 2019. The initiative encompasses a new runway, terminal structure, and enhanced amenities with the goal of turning Hanimaadhoo into a regional air travel center.

While visiting Hanimaadhoo on August 25, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his government's dedication to finishing and inaugurating the airport by November 2025. The President highlighted that the expansion of the airport is crucial for enhancing northern connectivity, tourism, and economic development.
