Two judges have been appointed to the Family Court and sworn in on Monday.
The appointments follow the vacancy created after former Family Court Chief Judge Ibrahim Mahir was appointed to the High Court on 25 September. Nominations for the post had been opened earlier on 17 September.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) appointed Ahmed Maumoon and Mohamed Zahid as the new judges. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Supreme Court, where Justice Aisha Shujoon Mohamed administered the oath of office.
Judge Ahmed Maumoon has been serving as a Legal Officer at the Family Court since 2020. He holds:
A Bachelor of Arts in Social Service and Community Development from Al-Azhar University
A Bachelor of Sharia with Honours from the Islamic University of the Maldives
A Postgraduate Certificate in Sharia and Law and a Master of Sharia from Villa College
Judge Mohamed Zahid has previously held several roles in the legal sector, including:
Deputy State Attorney at the Attorney General’s Office (2011–2013)
Principal Counsel at the Attorney General’s Office (2016–2018)
Judge at B. Dharavandhoo Magistrate Court (2013–2016)
He has also practised law for more than six years. Zahid holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sharia and Law from Al-Azhar University and a Master’s degree in Judicial Science and Sharia Policy from the Islamic University of the Maldives.
