On Wednesday, Former President Mohamed Nasheed suggested JP leader Qasim Ibrahim would be an excellent choice for Maldives prime minister.

It was a response to a comment made by Biledhdhoo MP Ahmed Haleem (Dhonbileh) in a WhatsApp group of parliamentarians.

In a text message, Dhonbileh said that Qasim, would make a good prime minister. He added Qasim's greatest service to the people would be to be fair to them and lead a revolution by becoming prime minister.

'Nasheed concurred' with the remarks made by Dhonbileh In addition, he claimed that Qasim would be a fine prime minister since he had a vision.

Nasheed complimented Qasim for his efforts to restructure the Maldives, saying he had seen them up close.

On the other hand, Ibrahim Rasheed (Bonde), Maafannu MP from Central Maafannu, said he could not support Qasim as prime minister.

While Dhonbileh said it would be difficult for some to hear about Qasim becoming prime minister, he also said it was important for everyone to let go of their bias and do what's best for the country.

"Qasim played a crucial role in changing the Maldives and establishing the multi-party system," he remarked.

Giving a response to that, Qasim said that he would be greateful if MDP would at least give him a peon position.

"A PEON, let alone a prime minister, would not be acceptable to the MDP" Qasim said.

There is a petition being circulated by Nasheed's supporters, which asks for a constitutional referendum to convert from the presidential system to a parliamentary system in the Maldives. Some Nasheed-supporting MDP legislators have signed the petition, which has accumulated thousands of signatures.
