The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held a rally in Malé on Friday evening to protest against what it described as government corruption and negligence in allocating land and flats in the Malé area.

The rally, held at the Carnival area under the slogan “Where is my flat, where is my land,” was attended by several sitting and former Members of Parliament, along with members of the party’s National Assembly.

Speakers at the rally criticised the government’s handling of housing projects, alleging unfair treatment and a failure to deliver on its promises to citizens.

Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir compared the current government’s housing policies with those of the previous MDP administration, saying that major housing projects had been implemented during the MDP’s tenure.

He said most of the groundwork for these projects had been completed, and payments made to companies contracted to build flats, but the current administration had failed to continue the projects.

Mauroof urged the President to resume the projects without delay and said that citizens should continue to protest for their rights.

“They can no longer take to the streets simply to seek housing and other rights that have been lost — they must continue to demand them,” he said.

He added that the government only acts when the MDP takes to the streets, and urged the public to attend the upcoming MDP rally scheduled for 17 November to press for housing and other rights.

Other speakers at the event included Makunudhoo MP Mohamed Rai and former Kulhudhuffushi North MP Yasir Abdul Latheef, who also criticised the government’s approach to housing and land allocation.
