Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has launched an internal investigation into the landing craft capsize that occurred near the MPL port in Malé on Sunday afternoon.

The incident took place at around 3:44 p.m. Six people were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment, including four Maldivians and two foreigners.

A Bangladeshi national and a Maldivian man died while receiving treatment, while the remaining four individuals have since been discharged.

In a statement issued on Monday, MPL extended its condolences to the families of the two employees who lost their lives and confirmed that an internal investigation had been initiated.

“The company’s departments have now launched an internal investigation into the incident. Further information will be released based on the findings,” the statement said.

MPL identified the two deceased as Masud Hossain, 32, a Bangladeshi national who had worked with the company as a labourer for more than three years, and Ali Aflah Abdulla, 25, from GA. Gemanafushi, who joined MPL as a labourer in December last year.

The company said it would continue to assess the incident and share updates once the investigation is complete.
