On Friday evening, the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Peoples' National Congress (PNC) conducted a statewide rally called "Seeking Justice." The crowd gathered outside Yameen's home in Male', where he is now being held under house arrest owing to the COVID-19 virus. In his residence on the second floor, Yameen waved to his followers from an open window. In addition, he raised the national flag and PPM's flag from his window, which drew applause from the audience in support of him.

Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu, Commissioner of Prisons, confirmed that the former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom acts were in breach of the terms and conditions of his house detention and action will be taken against him.

In a tweet posted following the rally, Commissioner claimed Yameen broke the rules of his house arrest by participating in the event. As a result, the commissioner stated that the incident will be investigated and action will be taken against Yameen.

On April 29, Yameen was placed under house arrest after some officers at the Maafushi Prison Complex tested positive for Covid-19. For his own safety, he was transferred to house arrest as one of the high-risk inmates. Yameen took part in the gathering on Friday evening by waving opposition and national flags and sending political words of encouragement to his supporters from an open window.

Ahead of the Eid-Al-Adha vacation, Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu indicated that conversations were taking place about moving the criminals who were placed under house arrest back to Maafushi Prison following the holiday. But later Maafushi Prison was placed quarantine after a prison officer got coronavirus resulting in delaying Yaameen's transfer back to prison.

Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison on November 28, 2019, after being found guilty of laundering USD one million through the state-owned MMPRC and a private company, Scores of Flair, while he was president. Along with the jail sentence, he was also ordered to pay a five-million-dollar fine, which must be paid within six months.

He is currently on trial for new accusations related to the leasing of Fuggiri island in the Raa atoll, and the trial is still ongoing.
