Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam, PPM's deputy leader, has declared that opposition coalition activities will continue even if former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom is sent to prison. He further stated that if Yameen is transferred to jail, they will not allow the government to breathe.

Shiyam said this after Maldives Correctional Service Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu tweeted that action would be taken against Yameen for taking part in the protest conducted by PPM this evening in breach of his house arrest rules.

In Shiyam's words, the opposition isn't undertaking a political activity, but a national one. In addition, he stated that he does not believe Yameen was involved in yesterday's protests.

"If Yameen had participated in the protest, he would have been on the streets right?" He had said.

Shiyam said that Yameen had not broken the terms of his home detention and that he had maintained his behaviour in accordance with what had been agreed.

In addition, Shiyam said that Yameen's appearance has given some of his supporter's optimism, which is something that MDP cannot accept. He claimed that CP Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu was "forced" to write his tweet because of government pressure.

Yameen was imprisoned in Maafushi Jail but was moved to home confinement after a COVID-19 outbreak in the prison in Apri.
