The uniforms of all government schools will be changed to four standard colours beginning in 2027, the Ministry of Education has announced.
A ministry official said the changes will take effect from 2027, and therefore school uniforms for next year will remain unchanged.
According to the ministry, the four colours selected for the new uniform system are:
Green
Red
White
Blue
The official said the colours are linked to the national flag and the official colours of the Ministry of Education. Schools will be able to choose which of the four colours they wish to adopt.
In addition, black and blue have been designated as the colours for trousers and skirts. Each school will have the authority to decide which combination they will use.
The official said many schools in Maldives are already using these colours, and therefore they will not be required to change their existing selections.
The new uniform guidelines will also introduce changes to clothing options. These include:
Boys from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 5 will wear trousers as part of their formal uniform
Girls will also be allowed to wear trousers
Female students may continue to wear skirts if they prefer
Students from Key Stage 2 and above will be required to wear ties
At present, most schools require girls to wear shirts and skirts, and although trousers are permitted with skirts, skirts remain compulsory.
