The Maldives' main ruling party, the MDP, says that the refusal to declare a state of emergency as an expedient response to the increased threat of terrorism is a serious worry.

To express its dismay over a bomb threat message found on Masjid Al-Noor in Male' City, MDP noted that this instance shows how far extremism has gone throughout the Maldives, and how much of a concern it poses for Maldivians.

Given that the Disappearances and Deaths Commission highlighted in its inquiry report that some extremist leaders propagate their ideas and undertake operations in coordination with international terror organizations in various mosques, including Masjid Al-Noor, MDP believes that such threat written in the mosque raises the possibility that security forces have failed to conduct sufficient surveillance.

MDP is especially concerned that the threat comes as the inquiry into the attempted assassination of Parliament Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed on May 6 is still ongoing.

As mosques are considered holy locations, the threat was allegedly written by terrorists preparing for an attack, according to the opposition party.

The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) called on the security services to take measures in order to protect the Maldives from terrorist assault.

The threat was spotted scrawled in Dhivehi on a pillar of Masjid Al-Noor in Male' City's Henveiru area on Sunday.

“We're going to do anything we want. Bombs are on their way to us. The statement reads, "We will destroy the Maldives.".

After receiving allegations of a possible terrorist attack, police confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine what happened.
