Inmate dies at Hulhumale' Prison

An inmate serving a three-year term at Hulhumale' Prison died immediately after being transferred to the hospital after falling while seated in the yard area.


According to the Maldives Correctional Service, Mohamed Aslam, (40, of Janavareege, GD. Vaadhoo), was sitting in the jail yard when he fainted unexpectedly, around 6pm. 


As reported by the Maldives Correctional Service, the hospital inspected him and notified the agency of his death at 8:23 pm.


Aslam was serving a three-year prison sentence for a drug-related offense.


According to the MCS, he was not on medication for a serious condition at the time of his death.


This event was promptly reported to the Inspector of Correctional Service, the Maldives Police Department, and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives.


The Home Ministry also issued a timeline of the incident.


Home Ministry said Aslam was caught on CCTV at 5:55 pm sitting atop the table.


He slipped from the table at 05:59 p.m. and collapsed. Immediately, a fellow prisoner began performing CPR.


Police arrived on the scene at 6:02 p.m. and discovered Aslam unconscious.


At 6:10 p.m., he was brought to the hospital. Immediately, he was attended to by doctors.


Officers began making phone calls to family members about soon. At 06:42 pm, they were able to contact a family member and inform them of the situation.


Correctional Service Inspector was alerted at 6:51 pm by officers.


Aslam was declared dead by doctors at 6:55 p.m., and Inspectorate personnel arrived to the site around 7:25 p.m., according to the report.


Police and the Human Rights Commission of Maldives have also been notified, according to Maldivian Correctional Service.
