Police have identified 30 locations currently operating as drug dens in Male', with the owners of six of those premises charged, authorities said on Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference held by the Drug Enforcement Department, chief inspector of police Mohamed Fathih said the number of drug dens in the capital has fallen, with 11 such locations shut down so far this year.
The minister of homeland security, Ali Ihusan, said last year that about 50 locations in Male', including some government buildings, were being used as drug dens. Police said that figure has now been reduced to 30.
Chief inspector Ahmed Naif said police have moved to dismantle “café-style” drug operations. As part of the effort, the owners of six houses have been charged and court proceedings are under way, although no cases have yet reached a verdict.
Police have previously raised concerns about the legal difficulties involved in closing down premises used for drug activity.
Naif said proposed amendments to the law would make it easier to shut such establishments and take action against those responsible.
