In a resounding show of parliamentary support, Dr Aishath Rameela has been unanimously appointed as President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). Nominated for the role by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Dr Rameela’s candidacy swiftly advanced, receiving the Human Rights and Gender Committee’s endorsement on January 5th.
The full Parliament convened in an extraordinary session, where all 38 attending Members of Parliament cast their votes in favour of her appointment. Dr Rameela’s journey with HRCM began with her initial approval as a member in October 2025, followed by her formal appointment as Commissioner on December 3rd.
Her elevation to the Commission’s presidency follows the completion of Mariyam Muna’s term, which left the post vacant. Previously, Dr Rameela served as the nation’s inaugural Agriculture and Animal Welfare Minister before stepping down in December 2024 due to health reasons.
She now leads a five-member commission, joined by Vice President Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmood, Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb Abdul Rahman, and Ahmed Magsoom.
