Maamigili Road Renewal: Long-Awaited Transformation Set in Motion After Seven-Year Hiatus

Originally launched in 2018 with a two-year completion horizon, the ambitious initiative faltered, leaving none of Maamigili’s principal roads completed and the community’s hopes deferred. A subsequent recontracting with the Road Development Corporation (RDC) in December 2020, valued at MVR 95 million, saw little progress beyond partial pavements and foundational gravel.

Last October, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the island, promising residents a definitive resolution to the persistent challenges posed by unfinished roads. Delivering on this promise, the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development has now commenced the formal asphalting process — tasked to the RDC — to bring Maamigili’s thoroughfares up to contemporary standards.

The project’s relaunch was marked by a ceremony attended by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib and RDC Managing Director Ibrahim Nazim, underscoring the significance of this development for the island.

This long-anticipated renewal promises to transform Maamigili’s streetscape, finally delivering the reliable infrastructure residents have been waiting for since 2018.
