Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, has strongly criticised the current visa facilitation process for Maldivian nationals travelling to Sri Lanka, citing significant inefficiencies and concerns over fair treatment.
Sri Lanka has long been a favoured destination for Maldivians — whether for holidays, medical care, or as a place of residence — boasting one of the largest Maldivian expatriate communities abroad.
While Maldivian travellers typically enjoy on-arrival visa privileges, those seeking extended stays or residency must navigate a more complex application process.
In a recent interview with Sri Lanka’s Daily News, High Commissioner Masood questioned the “step-motherly” treatment Maldivians reportedly face from Sri Lankan immigration officials.
He described Maldivians having to endure lines from morning to evening for visa processing. He highlighted a troubling lack of acknowledgment that Maldivians, like other foreigners, are entitled to dignified treatment — regardless of appearance.
“I am perplexed as to why officials only consider those who arrive in Sri Lanka with fair skin as visitors,” he remarked, calling for greater equity in immigration procedures.
He further alleged that some Maldivians have been reprimanded and spoken to harshly by immigration officers.
Conversely, he noted that visas are issued swiftly and without difficulty when applications are routed through third-party travel agents.
He expressed concern that this discrepancy may be linked to financial incentives for officials, as Maldivians incur additional fees when engaging travel agents for visa services.
Once regarded as the preferred destination for Maldivians pursuing education and healthcare, Sri Lanka’s appeal is reportedly waning. The number of Maldivian visitors for medical, educational, and tourism purposes has plummeted from 8,000 to 1,500, with many students now opting for opportunities in South India.
High Commissioner Masood cautioned that, should the situation persist, the Maldivian government may be compelled to reassess its own visa policies for Sri Lankan professionals working in the Maldives.
He concluded by underscoring the enduring friendship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, noting the Maldives’ consistent support for Sri Lanka on the international stage.
