The Maldivian government is set to introduce more stringent guidelines for tourists staying at hotels and guesthouses across the nation’s local islands.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the forthcoming measures during the inauguration of the ruling party’s main office in Malé, underscoring his administration’s commitment to fostering sustainable local tourism.

He cited the installation of ATMs on every local island as part of a broader initiative to boost the visitor experience and convenience. However, Muizzu acknowledged growing concerns among residents about tourist conduct, emphasising the need for higher standards for visitor behaviour.

“To address these issues, we are amending the guidelines and refining the rules and standards that tourists must observe while on local islands,” he stated.

He also highlighted the vital role of island councils in ensuring the successful implementation of these enhanced regulations. During his visits to the islands last year, President Muizzu publicly addressed concerns about tourist behaviour, notably during his remarks to the community of Alif Alif Ukulhas.
