President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has underscored the importance of cohesive collaboration between local councils and the government, highlighting that ongoing and future projects in the Malé region hinge on unified efforts at every level.
Speaking at the official inauguration of the PNC Office ahead of the forthcoming Local Council Election on 4 April, President Muizzu reiterated his call for unity and effective partnership. He emphasised the necessity of strong cooperation from the Mayor of Malé down to every councillor to realise his administration’s vision.
With recent legislative amendments, three councillors will now represent Hulhumalé — a key district of Malé — where the President stressed the need for municipal initiatives to be managed at the council level.
“Hulhumalé requires councillors who share my vision for high-quality, efficient service delivery,” he noted. “Only then can councils operate autonomously and effectively in providing vital municipal services.”
President Muizzu has consistently advocated for the election of PNC councillors committed to collaboration — ensuring that projects such as housing and road repairs for island residents can be executed seamlessly.
“Nothing will move forward if we do not receive cooperation from councils; delays are something the citizens do not want,” he cautioned.
He highlighted the candidacy of former Defence Minister and Chief of Defence Force Moosa Ali Jaleel, praising his integrity and capability as PNC’s pick for Mayor of Malé. President Muizzu also expressed support for Mushrif Ali, PNC’s candidate for Mayor of Addu City — the Maldives’ second largest urban centre.
He pointed to the multitude of ongoing development projects in Addu and stressed the importance of council cooperation to ensure their success.
“Similarly, significant projects have been signed for Thinadhoo City, Fuvahmulah City and Kulhudhuffushi City — with many initiatives already underway or budgeted for this year,” the President added.
“Each of these projects relies on council support. Without their cooperation, progress will be hampered, and delays — unacceptable to our citizens — will ensue,” he concluded.
President Muizzu concluded that only by electing councillors who prioritise collaboration can essential development projects be delivered efficiently and on schedule.
