Former Fisheries Minister Dr Ibrahim Didi stated last night that Malé Mayor Adam Azim merits re-election for a second term, as his name does not appear on the MMPRC corruption list.

Speaking at a campaign rally for Adam Azim — who is contesting in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primaries for the Malé Mayor ticket — Dr Didi described Adam Azim as an exemplary individual.

Dr Didi stated that Adam Azim is a sincere, patient and caring person of integrity.

He stated that he had backed Adam Azim in his first bid for mayor for these very reasons, adding that Adam Azim is currently serving as mayor on the strength of a campaign he had run independently.

Adam Azim's opponent in the MDP primaries — scheduled for 16 January — is former MP for the Central Henveiru constituency, Ali Azim. Dr Didi indirectly referenced Ali Azim's role in forming the breakaway party, The Democrats, after rifts arose in the MDP, and asserted that Adam Azim would never harbour thoughts of dismantling the party. He further noted that Adam Azim's name had not appeared on the list of those involved in the MMPRC corruption scandal.

Despite rumours linking Ali Azim to the MMPRC corruption scandal, he firmly denies any involvement.
